*The Therapy Dog Prep class is an extension of the Canine Good Citizen class for
those folks who want their dog to be a certified therapy dog. It will be held in the
lobby after the six week Canine Good Citizen course. The course is NOT a
requirement to take the TDI examination; however, it will accustom your dog to
things like wheel chairs, walkers, etc. The course will consist of three classes for
$40. After the course is completed, we will set a date and time for a TDI Certification
test. Any dog will be welcome to take the TDI test at that time.

Here's Dorothy.....and the Rainbow Bridge she
'built' here at Hollowell. Remember, if you have
lost a pet--no matter what species, you can put a
picture up on the Rainbow Bridge wall at
Hollowell. Consider placing a favorite picture of
your departed pets on this wall! Donations taken
for remembering and posting past pets who
have owned you are used to supplement the
Hollowell Special Needs fund! This fund is
decided on a case-by-case basis for present or
past clients of Hollowell. Repayment is
encouraged so the fund can remain available to
others needing temporary emergency care.

Diane's 2 sisters paid Hollowell a visit in August to meet with a good friend who is a big fan of Dr. Shirene Cece (far right), the vet on Detroit Animal Cops. That is Deb Howbert with her grandson Keaton sitting to the left of Dr. Cece. On the left is her important middle sister, Carolyn Cece.

Reminder: Classes start Week of April 5, 2010! Just as you are striving to do in
your home, we are holding the cost of our dog training classes down again this year.
We believe the importance of sharing life with a dog can be a most beneficial treat for
any of us and a well trained dog makes it so easy! When training your own dog in our
classes at Hollowell, we find the bonding and trust earned during the training creates
both closeness and better health for each part of the team: you and your dog! Likewise,
the time spent leads to great stress relief both mentally and physically if you need a way
to make a time commitment for yourself. Join us this session and see the difference this
can make in your life!
New Rally-O and Tricks Classes begin on Monday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $80.
Senior Citizen's Beginner's class runs on Wednesday at 9 a.m. First class is Apriil 7. Cost is
the low, low price of $55.
Does your dog need a refresher course? Try our popular Rally-o class on Monday at 6 p.m.
Cost is $80. If you have already taken the class and want to do a 'drop-in' class for sharpening
skills for yourself and your dog, the cost is only $15 for the one night of class!

BREAKFAST WITH YOUR DOG - was held on Saturday, February 20th. We hit our
maximum capacity again this year for a wonderful brunch buffet which all enjoyed while
watching the dogs playing together. We will be holding this event again in 2011 so consider
attending so you can see what all the fun is about!
H1N1 Flu confirmed in dog..... In our last newsletter, we reported that a cat in Illinois was
confirmed to have the Swine flu. We have now learned that a dog has been confirmed with
H1N1. Apparently an owner in the house had been sick the week before the dog began
showing symptoms. The owner recovered without seeking medical treatment. When the dog
became ill, it was taken to the vet and testing confirmed that it had H1N1 flu.
Cats appear to be more likely to get the H1N1 (Swine) flu than dogs. However, it doesn't hurt to
take precautions. If you are sick, wash your hands before handling your dog. Sounds like the
same rules apply that we would use to prevent spreading the disease from one person to
another.
Outside Pets Need More Attention...... If you have a cat or dog that lives outside,
please take these extra steps to keep them comfortable during cold winter days. Put clean, dry
straw in the dog house. If the straw gets wet, replace it ASAP. Wet straw loses it's warming
capability. Be sure water bowls and buckets aren't frozen. Check them frequently and replace
water as needed. Increase caloric intake by up to one third! Animals living outside need more
calories to keep warm. Check ears for frost bite. I urge you to bring your pets in on days when
the temperature dips in the single digits.
And keep those bird feeders stocked! You can also make a mixture of peanut butter, Crisco
shortening, rolled oats and flour or corn meal mix to spread on tree trunks. The birds will flock
to your yard. The mixture will give them an extra boost of energy during winter months.
A water source for the birds will ensure that they come to your yard.
If your dog or cat has hairy feet, try trimming the hair away from the bottom of the foot. That will
help prevent ice & snow balls from forming on their feet.
Be sure the product you use to melt the ice and snow from your walkways is safe for pets!
If you change the antifreeze in your car, be sure you store it away from pets. A tablespoon of
antifreeze ingested by a cat or small dog can be fatal. If you suspect your pet has ingest
antifreeze, no matter how small the amount, go to the vet or emergency clinic immediately!
DROP IN FRIDAYs...... Each Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., our training building is open to
anyone who wants extra training time. There is no instructor. Come in and do your own thing.
Cost is $5. Kathy or JoEllen will be there to open and close doors and collect the fee.
SEE YOU AT CLASS THIS WEEK!
