*The Therapy Dog Prep class is an extension of the Canine Good Citizen class for those folks
who want their dog to be a certified therapy dog. It will be held in the lobby after the six week
Canine Good Citizen course. The course is NOT a requirement to take the TDI examination;
however, it will accustom your dog to things like wheel chairs, walkers, etc. The course will
consist of three classes for $40. After the course is completed, we will set a date and time for
a TDI Certification test. Any dog will be welcome to take the TDI test at that time.

Senior citizens beginner's class remains on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. for the low, low price of $65.

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF ALLEN COUNTY
I had lunch on Friday with the new president of the Board of the Humane Society of Allen County.
Michael Ley was voted in as president in April and he has a huge task ahead. I found Michael to
be very pleasant and honest. He answered all of my questions, and I am delighted to report that
the board of trustees unanimously voted to rescind the NO KILL policy that has been in place for
the past 6-7 years. Michael said the HS is not quite ready to open its doors to any and all animals,
but that is a goal for the future. They have to get fund raising in place, and they need more
people to volunteer, not only at the shelter but also at their weekly bingo games. The HS plans to
put out a press release next week about their decision to go to a "No Suffering" Shelter. They
will euthanize animals that are suffering with a health problem or those that have a temperament
that cannot be rehabilitated. I applaud their brave and wise decision. If you have a few extra
dollars to donate to a worthy cause or if you have an extra hour or two you can donate to the
shelter, please contact them ASAP.
OHIO PUPPY LEMON LAW
Ohio Senate Bill 130 proposes to make pet stores selling live animals provide a money-back
guarantee for up to 21 days after the purchase date of the dog. The purchaser would have to
provide documentation from a veterinarian stating that the dog has a "significant disease, illness
or injury that was in existence at the time of purchase." If passed, this bill would also establish a
licensing process for "high volume" dog breeders.
SALMONELLA WARNING -- AGAIN!
We reported in previous newsletters that the #1 cause of Salmonella poisoning in dogs and cats
are pig ears and for that reason, we do not sell them in our store. The AVMA recently urged
consumers to avoid certain pet products to minimize salmonella risks. The main product
causing the problem is , once again, pig ears!
HUMANE SOCIETY DOGS TRAINED AT HOLLOWELL GET ADOPTED!
Jill Schlumpberger is a volunteer at the Humane Society of Allen County. Jill trained a couple of
her own dogs through Hollowell's classes and then asked if she could bring shelter dogs to the
classes for training. Jill brings one dog at a time at no charge to the Thursday morning
beginner's obedience class. Vegas, Bandit, Annie, Moe, Owen, Wilson, Sehren, and Hobo have
all come through obedience classes under Jill's guidance. We are thrilled to report that almost
every one of the dogs was adopted quickly when their graduation certificate was posted on their
cage! Great Job, Jill!
CAN A DOG BARK ITSELF TO DEATH?
Apparently it can! A dog that was being boarded in a Manhattan veterinary clinic barked so
much that its throat swelled shut and he collapsed, unable to breathe. The English Bulldog
named Cowboy died when the clinic staff did not recognize the dog's distress and provide
medical treatment.
AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB INTRODUCES THREE NEW BREEDS
The American Kennel Club brought the number of breeds it recognizes to 173. The three latest
additions are the American English Coonhound, the Finnish Lapphunds, and the Cesky Terrier.

You can learn about these breeds by visiting the American Kennel Club's web site: www.akc.org
AKC ALLOWS LURE COURSING FOR ALL DOGS
Up until recently, lure coursing (the sport where a dog runs after a specific object), was reserved
for sighthounds; i.e., whippets, greyhounds, etc. Recently, AKC developed the Coursing Ability
Test (CAT) for all dogs, including mixed breeds. A dog must be at least a year old and
individually registered or listed with AKC. Dogs that pass the CAT three times will earn a
Coursing Ability Title. When a dog passes 10 times, it will earn the Coursing Ability Advanced
(CAA) title. To earn a Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) title, a dog must pass 25 tests.
Dogs that enjoy chasing something will love lure coursing! To learn how to register or list your
dog with AKC and to find out more about lure coursing, visit AKC's web site: www.akc.org
AKC THERAPY DOG TITLE
At the urging of many people, AKC developed the Therapy Dog program. To earn an AKC
Therapy Dog title (THD), a dog must be certified by an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization
and have made at least 50 community visits. The title is available to all breeds, as well as mixed
breeds. Therapy Dogs International and Delta Society are two of the AKC-recognized
organizations. Other organizations are listed on the AKC web site. If your dog is an active
therapy dog and you want to apply for the new Therapy Dog title, go to the AKC's web site and
print off the application form. Please let Hollowell know when you earn your Therapy Dog title so
we can publish your name and your dog's name in our newsletter!
READING-TO-THE-DOG PROGRAM
We all know kids who struggle learning to read. They get embarrassed reading in front of other
students and/or their teacher because they fear they'll mispronounce a word. There is a growing
movement to have children read to pets! Pets don't care if you miss a word or if you stutter while
reading. The pet simply listens -- without judging. Educators are finding that children who read
to a dog or cat improve their reading skills. Some schools in the Lima community already have a
dog participating in the program. More dogs are needed. If you have a therapy dog and would
like to help a child learn to read, contact Helen Bibler at 419-228-7255. Helen has a reading dog
named Bear and will help you get started in this valuable and wonderful program.
TICKED OFF
Ticks are bad this season! You may already be using a product to prevent ticks from getting on
your pet, but nothing is 100% effective. There's a new product on the market called Ticked Off.
"Ticked Off is a small spoon-shaped device with a slot for removing the tick at the appropriate
angle." Ticked Off president, Richard Hebbard, was once a deputy sheriff in a K-9 unit when he
decided to find a better way to get ticks off a dog. Do not use tweezers to remove a tick. If you
don't get the entire tick or if the tick is infected, you can do more harm than good to the dog. Visit
Ticked Off's web site at tickedoff@ttlc.net to get more information or to order the product.
DOGS EAT THE DARNDEST THINGS!
A veterinary pet insurance company tracked claims they received for items that were removed
from a pet's stomach. Here are some of the strange ones: an extension cord, eyeglasses, steel
wool pads, light bulb, tent door, box of pencils, hearing aid, glass Christmas ornament, tube of
denture adhesive, jellyfish, tv remote control, rosary crucifix, watch, and a baseball.
NATIONAL PET OBESITY AWARENESS STUDY
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), more than half the dogs and
cats in the US are overweight. We all know the drawbacks to being overweight in people, and
it's pretty much the same for pets. It's hard to resist those soulful eyes, begging us for just a
taste of something they shouldn't have. Don't give in! It's bad for the pet and in the long run, it's
going to be bad for your wallet as the pet's health declines from being fat. Look down at your
dog and if it doesn't have a waistline, it's too heavy. Talk to your vet about the appropriate diet
for your overweight pet..
