Professor Comparative Ophthalmology, OSU, will be conducting CERF exams and diagnostic exams at our annual Canine Eye Clinic. The ophthalmic exam can detect genetic eye diseases/disorders such as cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, collie eye anomaly, etc. The diagnostic exam is for any canine eye problem including plugged tear ducts and excessive tear staining. This is a golden opportunity for breeders and dog owners to have their dog's eyes examined right here in Lima. Every dog that is being bred, regardless of the breed, should have its eyes examined annually by a board certified ophthalmologist. Breeds in which genetic eye disorders are common are: Poodles (all varieties), cocker spaniels, golden retrievers, schnauzers, collies, Labrador retrievers, Irish setters. Microchipping your dog may save its life! A dog that is permanently identified is more likely to be returned to its owner if it is lost or stolen. The microchip is a rice-size chip with a unique number. The chip is inserted under the dog's skin by the shoulder blades. This is a relatively painless, quick procedure. Every dog should be permanently identified! |
